Dissatisfaction with increasingly oppressive Mexican rule on the part of the Texians led, ultimately, to war and in February 1836 Santa Anna marched his army into Texas. He lay siege to the old mission named the Alamo outside San Antonio. It was defended by a legendary collection of volunteers under Colonel William Travis and the famous adventurer Jim Bowie (he of the knife), and included David Crockett.

About the Author
Dr Stephen L Hardin is a senior research fellow for the Texas State Historical Association in Austen, Texas, and the author of numerous scholarly articles on the history of his state. Angus McBride needs little introduction, having established himself over the years as one of the world's most respected and talented artists in his field. He has illustrated a wide array of Osprey titles, covering subjects as diverse as the Geman Army of World War 2 and the Ancient Assyrians - a versatility that is the envy of many, but the pleasure of more. Angus specialises in the Ancient and Medieval periods however, where his work is unsurpassed in both technical accuracy and creative atmosphere. Angus lives and works in Cape Town, Republic of South Africa.

Osprey at its best!
This is one of the best Campaign series from Osprey. Very well written, with excellent maps and purely delicious colour plates by the great master of war illustration in person, Angus McBride (recently disappeared, to the great regret of all military history passionates). This is a relatively small scale campaign, so the author could describe it with some details and did a really great job - Osprey Campaigns are usually at their best when describing smaller battles, like Monongahela or Rorke's Drift. I didn't find one flaw in this book, so without further formalities, go, buy it, read it, keep it. What, you are still here?
