'Never, except in the battle of Cannae, had there been so destructive a slaughter recorded in our annals.' Thus the Roman historian Ammianus Marcellinus recorded the battle of Adrianople, which spelied the beginning of the end of the Roman Empire. Such a crushing Roman defeat by Gothic cavalry proved to the Empire, as well as to the Goths themselves, that the migratory barbarians were a force to be reckoned with. Simon Macdowall tells the story of the misguided Roman plans and the surprise attack of Gothic cavalry, and puts forward the most recent theories as to the true location of the battlefield.

Customer Reviews
Great book about the one of the most fateful battles ever
This book is not like the other history books. It actually delivers an exciting story, full of extraordinary achievments on both sides, full of hope, despair, sorrow...
I was amazed to see how one Roman talkative soldier decided the outcome of the battle and eventually the Empire.
We are not distant from the events described here, we see the same (and sometimes worse) refugee crisis every day on TV news. This story is actual, even today, and warns us what could happen if things somehow go wrong.
This book is so dynamic that virtually begs to be filmed. This could be a bigger blockbuster than Gladiator!
Great book, I recommed it to everyone.
Intersting subject...just lacking though
Very interesting subject, sadly the author just doesn't manage to grip the reader. Not one of Ospreys best books. Shame!
