The German 88 mm was by far the most famous and versatile artillery weapon of World War II. It was first used as an anti-aircraft weapon by the Condor Legion during the Spanish Civil War. It saw further service in the German invasions of Poland and France, and during this period it was first used in the anti-tank role. This new role was particularly successful and the 88 became feared by tank crews from North Africa to Russia. Apart from these two main roles the 88 mm was used as the main weapon on late-war German tanks, as a self-propelled gun, mounted on battleships such as the Bismarck and the Schamhorst and even as an aerial weapon. John Norriss covers all these variants, explaining their design, development and operational use.

Not impressed
I'm currently doing a model build of a Flak 18 and wanted a handy reference it terms of photos, drawings etc. I must admit I bought this blind as there is little choice.
However, this is a brief work and should be considered a taster.
Most of the pictures included are general and do not show much in terms of detail.
The colour plates are also not of a high standard and would not seem out of place in an old time war comic.
The reference drawings showing side, above, behind views are limited and small. All 4 views of the Flak 18 are on one page, size A5.
In my opinion, it would have been better to give each technical view it's own page and put the comic book drawings, two or three to a page.
Buy this if you are looking for a general intro to the weapons but not much more.
