Product Description

The D-Day landings of 6 June 1944 were the largest amphibious military operation ever mounted. During the late spring and early summer of 1944 the roads and ports of Southern England were thronged with the troops, vehicles and ships of the invasion force. The greatest armada the world had ever seen had been assembled to transport US 1st Army and British 2nd Army across the narrow strip of the Channel and open the long-awaited second front against Hitler's Third Reich. This book reveals the events of this single day on Utah Beach, one of the two US landings.

Too big a subject for the size of the book5
As a collector of the books in Osprey's Campaign Series covering World War Two, I was a little disappointed in this effort. As usual, Steven Zaloga writes a clear narrative of the events; however this book just tries to cover too much. In addition to covering Utah beach and the US airborne landing, the account also deals with the US VII Corp advance from the beachhead and the assault on Cherbourg. The main problem is that the account of the US airborne operations is very selective with quite detailed accounts of some of their actions and others just ignored. I would have preferred to see the US follow up assaults on Cherbourg and St.Lo covered under a separate title. Although Osprey now has eight titles in its Campaign series covering the battle for Normandy (including the early overview of the whole campaign) it would appear that the US army's operations against St.Lo will be missing from the list.

Day of Days but not Book of Books4
Usual high quality Ken Ford book. Good effort, informative. Tedious read at times and just following unit numbers across Northern France doesn't make it the personal experience one wishes for.
Too expensive as usual with Osprey lately.
Makes good collection with the other three books.
