Product Description

This book examines the origins and development of the Polish Winged Hussars. Using many years' painstaking research drawn from unpublished Polish sources, the author provides a rounded view of the training, tactics, appearance and experiences of these legendary and fascinating warriors. The most dramatic of all Hussar characteristics were the wings worn on the back or on the saddle, although not all Hussars wore them, and their purpose has been fiercely debated. The Hussars terrified the Turks, Tatars, Muscovite boyars, Ukrainian Cossacks and Swedes, who did everything to avoid facing them directly in battle.

Customer Reviews

If you're Polish you'll like this one!4
Wonderful book on Polish winged Hussar. Very detailed, great plates. Plenty of Polish names included.
Sadly hardly covers the hussars greatest achievment the rescue of Vienna 1683...one of the main resons I was interested in the book.
Mainly covers 16th Century.
Chapter "why did they have wings" concludes without conclusion!
Great book for those interested.
Exclusivly strong polish flaire may be to much for average student.
Overpriced by Osprey as always.

Another good Osprey4
Again, a good Osprey - they vary SO much from volume to volume. Readable and informative text, good illustrations and an excellent companion to the other Osprey titles on the POlish army of this era.

Exellent research5
Brzezinski is without a doubt one of the leading experts on winged Polish/Lithuanian/Hungarian hussars in the world today. There have been many years of hard research done by the author before this publication and you can tell by every page you read in this excellent book. Still he does not get stiff or academically boring. A very easily read and informative book with very fine illustrations by Velimir Vuksic.
