Review
"This handbook is useful as a 'refresher' for clinical practice and as a reference for the assesment of clinical presentation as well as the management of women with known medical problems. It can be recommended to obstetricians (consultants and trainees), physicians, general practitioners and midwives, particularly if they have a special interest in complicated pregnancy care." Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, March 2008
Synopsis
"Handbook of Obstetric Medicine, Third Edition" is divided into two main sections. The major part of the text deals with the most common and serious medical conditions encountered in pregnancy, with a chapter for each system including heart disease, hypertension, thromboembolism, diabetes, skin problems, gastrointestinal disease and so on. The clear format with tables, bullet points and boxes of key points has been retained from the second edition. All chapters have been substantially updated and the second section is in tabular format and concentrates on the differential diagnosis of common symptoms, signs and biochemical abnormalities encountered in pregnancy. This third edition of the "Handbook of Obstetric Medicine" provides a didactic approach to management and will be an essential on-the-spot guide for health care professionals caring for pregnant women with medical problems, including obstetricians, physicians, family practitioners, and midwives in both practice and training.
From the Back Cover
The management of the pregnant woman with a medical problem presents the clinician with particular problems. An understanding of how a medical disease affects pregnancy and how any pre-existing medical condition is affected by pregnancy is required. In addition the clinician must take into account the second patient – the fetus – and be aware of how drug therapy and management strategies may influence fetal well-being.

Handbook of Obstetric Medicine
I bought this book when it was first published and gave my 1st edition away to the hospital I was working for. It is a comprehensive and extremely readable book, which clearly lays out the principles of diagnosis and treatment for the most common medical disorders we encounter in pregnancy.
The style is extremely accessable, allowing you to read chapters contiguously or "dip in" as the need arises.
It is robust enough to be used as a reference book, and also excellent as a learning aid for the MRCOG part II examination.
I have no reservations in highly recommending it.
Good book for O&G trainee
Good book to read for medical management of o&G patients. Aim at trainee and consutants alike. Amazon did a very cheap price for this good book
