In this immensely readable and wide-ranging book, Bernard Lewis charts the successive transformations of the Middle East, beginning with the two great empires, the Roman and the Persian, and covering the growth of Christianity, the rise and spread of Islam, the waves of invaders from the east, the Mongol hordes of Jengiz Khan, the rise of the Ottoman Turks, and the changing balance of power between the Muslim and Christian worlds. 'This book is a masterpiece' Sir Anthony Parsons, Daily Telegraph

Customer Reviews
Educational
i found this book educational as it covered aspects of the middle easts economy, religion, culture and social aspects, as well as education systems. i would therefore recommend it highly to people interested in these specific areas, perhaps for research purposes. however as a layman interested in general history for the sake of history i was a bit disappointed with the book. the book is divided into two sections - the first being exactly what i wanted, a general introduction to the history of the middle east, however this only lasted for about a quater to a third of the book. after this it got a bit too spacific for a general light reader, and became a bit of a struggle to get through.
it was however very well researched and put together, and most definatly educational!
Comprehensive and balanced
This book makes an excellent read for those who want a brief insight into the history of the Middle East. Lewis portrays a balanced view of both failures and successes in this region.
EXCELLENT
For everything to know about the history of The Middle East whether you want to just browse or get an entire overview. I am really enjoying it.
