Product Description

"An excellent book...It most skillfully indicates all the essential connections between the Civil War's political, social, and military aspects."--C.V. Wedgwood, Daily Telegraph. "Excellent use of eye-witness material."--The Times Educational Supplement. Although the battles of the English Civil War were relatively small--only one involved as many as 20,000 men on either side--they involved the greatest of issues and are rich with human interest. These masterly studies of three major clashes provide detailed background, and military developments are painstakingly recounted. Even more important, the political and religious concerns receive every bit as much attention.

A little classic that costs almost nothing4
The late 'Bunny' Woolrych was a highly respected Professor of history at Lancaster University, who had an encylopedic knowledge of the period - and took its military history seriously. This was an unusual combination in the UK of the 1950s and 1960s. We owe him a considerable debt for beginning to open up the stories of the battles of the period, and in the case of Preston in particular 'Battles of the English Civil War' was a ground breaking study. The volume has some useful black and white images, though the bibliography and notes are somewhat sparse by modern standards. All of the battles described have been revisted in recent years, but Woolrych's work remains generally reliable, and a good read. It is particularly good at working battles into the 'bigger picture' - an area in which many others have fallen down badly. Well worth having.

This is a great book. I'm a wargamer so its helped me no end with working out scenarios. Well worth a read even if you're not a wargamer.
