About the Author
John Hemming has long been interested in the conquest period of South America. He has experienced expeditions cutting into unexplored Amazon forest, and has visited many American Indian tribes, notably on the upper Amazon, on the hills of the Brazilian-Venezuelan frontier, in the interior of the Guianas, and along the length of the Andes. He is a former Director and Secretary of the Royal Geographical Society.
