Elmer the colourful patchwork elephant has been a nursery favourite since this first book was published in 1989. A modern classic, this picture book is known to millions, and continues to be the strongest seller of the whole series, having sold over 2 million copies around the world. The subtle message is that it is OK to be different, and combined with the vibrant colour and cheeky humour of the main character, this small edition is a celebration of its continued popularity.

Unforgettable colours!
Elmer the colourful elephant is made to feel ashamed for his differences, and covers his `true colours', as he is dazzling a patchwork of colours instead of being grey. In order to blend in, Elmer paints himself grey, but sooner after the other elephants literally see through his disguise as it washes off in front of them. Elmer is ridiculed, but it isn't long before they all see the errors of their ways and decide to celebrate his rainbow colours by decorating themselves in a similar fashion to Elmer.
For Reception, and Years ! and 2, the book raises points on key subjects such as cultural differences and acceptance of others values. It was used at [Primary School] as part of KS1 themed week, with art activities and hall displays. Through personally assisting with this themed week, I realised how many avenues books such as these can open up for a class.
Elmer keeps little ones entertained
My two little boys, (ages 3 and 5), both love Elmer books, but I think that this one is our favourite.
In this story Elmer is fed up of being different, and hatches a plan to be just like all the other elephants. However, he soon finds that although he now looks the same as everyone else, they still recognise him due to his playful nature. The ending is sure to put a smile on anyone's face...and I'm sure that my sons carefully check every elephant they ever see, just in case it is Elmer!
The illustrations are lovely, colourful, (obviously?!), and provide lots to talk about. Recommended.
Gorgeous Book!
