Product Description

Bird flu has arrived in the UK. Most of the population are dead or dying so fast that there's not enough time to bury them. Norman's survived ... so far, and when his grandfather gets sick he knows that there can only be one outcome - but not before some secrets are revealed that will change Norman's life forever. A startlingly original and darkly humorous tale. A short novel for emergent reader adults.

Customer Reviews

The Chop - Graham Hurley5
This is a short story (77 pages) involving Norman ("Old Wonky") and his life, relatives and friends during a time when Bird Flu has come to Britain. People are dying from cold like symptoms and the situation escalates to a State of Emergency.

Set in Suffolk, Hurley has written this in the first person from what at first sight seems the view of a child. Later on it is realised that is not quite the case. The simplistic writing and view of life is cleverly done and you easily and quickly warm to Old Wonky. However there is a serious dimension to this novel with its very dark theme.

Hurley is one of my favourite writers and his books leave a lasting impression with me. However, this one, I kept thinking about just that little bit more.

Avoid - Unless overridden by Curiosity1
Thoroughly disappointed with this futuristic, child-like, mini-story.

In view of Hurley's previous output I had high expectations but these were not met.

Not value for money and unlikely to become so unless price should fall to 50p.
