"The Social Worker's Guide to Children and Families Law" is an accessible, jargon-free guide to the key elements of the law that concern practising social workers in children and families teams in England and Wales. This resource for everyday practice includes explanations of the fundamental concepts of parental responsibility and human rights, and the detailed provisions of private and public law, including adoption. The legal issues raised by atypical families (such as those in gay relationships, of mixed heritage or with children or parents with disabilities) are also covered throughout the text. It includes bullet lists, checklists and charts for quick and easy reference, as well as highlighted points for practice and illustrative case scenarios to put the law into context. This guide will be an invaluable resource for practising social workers, as well as trainees, students and those studying for post-qualifying awards.

Customer Reviews
A must for social workers.
If anyone doubts a law book could be a page turner they should read Lynn Davis' Social Worker's guide to Children and Families Law. Perhaps I expected this book to be a bit like her previous book, which wouldn't be a bad thing, but this book for me, has taken the subject of children's law to new heights of understanding.
The presentation and detail was as I expected from this author, making it very readable. The layout, and in particular the appendix pages made referring back to previous chapters easy and efficient.
The case studies ought to make every social worker reading this book think and re think their position on how to present every case.
Social workers these days are under pressure to perform and their case loads are often too much. This book puts things into perspective. It will help social workers evaluate their own case studies when dealing with legal issues on parenting.
The book basically does what it says it does: it will help guide social workers in law, which can only help vulnerable children and their families, and is written in Ms Davis' usual jargon free and honest style I have come to appreciate.
Law becomes alive
Just to recommend this book wholeheartedly to anyone who wants to get to grips with Children and Families Law in England. Lynn Davis really manages to bring the Law alive and demonstrates how to use it for the benefit of Children and Families. If you are a student, read it as it has loads of case studies, good discussion points and makes you think. As a practitioner I will have this book very close to my workplace!
I never used to understand and really engage with the law but I have enjoyed reading this book and engage with the subject through all the interesting cases and discussions.
