This book is the only guide you will need to explore all the most important historical sites on the planet. From Stonehenge to the Great Wall of China, from Sterkfontein Caves - the 'cradle of humanity' in South Africa to Checkpoint Charlie, Germany and everywhere inbetween. The book explores all the sites that bear significance to us today. Places where Kings and Queens were crowned, wars were won and lost, people worship are all featured here, as well as sites that saw great advancements in structural engineering. Some will be familiar to all, others are less well-known but informed, entertaining text and stunning photography will ensure the reader has immense satisfaction at the discovery of each and every one.

Trying to decide where to go next?5
This book is perfect for those travellers who can't decide where they want to head off to next. In particular, those that are keen on more historic places and even places you didn't know existed!! Makes a great coffee table book that you can just pick up and flick through when the grey weather is getting you down and you need something to look forward to.

OK for an Idle Browse3
Obviously, this is not a book to sit and read through, but to pick up now and then. Good for a dentist's waiting room, though unlikely to allay my stress. The entries are arbitrary and superficial, probably a result of the size of the undertaking combined with an obvious American influence. Fine, maybe, for pointers ahead of a trip (or to see what you missed when you get home), but definitely not a guide book or a reference source. I came across the similar '1001 Buildings .... ....' in a café; that might have been a more absorbing purchase.
