An unsung hero and his dog!
This delightfully written little book tracks the life of this great man who lived in the shadow of his great lifelong friend Lord Nelson without envy. It is a must for anyone remotely interested in our naval history. The author records a lfe of selfless service to his country during which he brought the art of naval gunnery to a level unknown before and set a standard which became the bellwether for generations of future gunnery officers. Those amongst our current servicemen who complain about the length of a 6 month detachment away from their families would do well to read this book and learn how the selfless devotion to duty of men like Collingwood who were parted from their families for years at a time changed the course of European and World history. A great read about a great man. For those less interested in naval history the book is a fascinating record of the role of Northumbrian families in the story of the Royal Navy.
