Worth a read but could be better...
For me the series needs a new lease of life. The storytelling is less vivid than in the King books, and the plot here seemed pretty shallow and unremarkable. I guessed the plot's villains far too early. Previously, we've had greater daemons, dragons, giants, chaos champions/armies, and vampire lords...here it's not so 'grandiose'. The 'atmosphere' that really captured the 'grim world of perilous adventure' overtone for the Old World just hasn't been present in Orcslayer and Manslayer. I think the plots and the narrative style need to improve! On a more positive note, it's good to see new titles being released on a more regular basis at last!
Gotrek and Felix, bookslayers
Accept for my corny title, which does really does describe the Gotrek and Felix Warhammer books. While you get what you expect from most warhammer books, action voilence and impression what what a dark world warhammer is, its got a lot more persides. This book continues on from the last Gotrek and Felix book Orcslayer, which many rated as not being as good as the other slayer books. Well i don't think anyone can say that about manslayer, it's got action character development and good old fantasy in bucket loads. While my fav slayer books have been wirtten by William King, the author Nathan Long really does improve on his early efforts. The character development improves a lot from the last book going into how Gotrek must feel about killing his old friend in the last book. Ulrika turns up from Felix's past and her part in the book vampireslayer and is a important character in this book, with lots of conflicting emotions of what could have been coming from both her and Felix. U get a basic outline of the story from above so i won't go to into it but there's many references from Skavenslayer and what interesting things could happen in upcoming books. This a a great book, my only problem being that the title cover gives a lot away about the ending quarter of the way through the book but some parts of the ending being a brilliant twist. Well worth buying for any fan of fantasy and the other slayer books. Enjoy!.
A step up from Orcslayer, but only a single step
William King was actually a decent fantasy writer; he managed to inject a real sense of character and humanity into his writing, with amusing incidents running alongside an interesting plot. Nathan Long has so far prolonged the series in the same manner that a life-support machine can preserve a coma victim: it lives, yes, but actually achieves nothing. The return of previous characters and locations amuse at first, but inferior authorship means that all seems futile and hollow: he takes his inspiration from the King, but does not truly understand what he meddles with. Only a brave fan of Gotrek and Felix will truly find any enjoyment here. If I heard that this series would end in a novel written by Mr King himself, I would gladly read it, but this book left me with no desire to rush out and buy Elfslayer.
