After focusing on the start and roots of the Never Ending Tour, Williams surveys Dylan's work in 1990, and the 1997 Time Out of Mind and 2001 Love and Theft albums. There's also an essay on a fine examples of a Never Ending show from 1998. Paul William's writing about Bob Dylan has been praied by such distinguished Dylan fans as Sam Shepard, Jerry Garcia and Allen Ginsberg. One member of Dylan's band says he found reading William's books on Dylan helpful when he first joined the band and needed to become more familiar with his new boss's huge output of work.

Customer Reviews
An excellent photobook of Bob Dylan in concert.
This is the second of John Hume's photobooks on Bob Dylan, and it really is a labour of love. Hume has photographed Dylan live on stage on more occasions than anyone else in the world. Having seen Dylan over 180 times from 1978 to the present day, he really has an excellent portfolio of photos to choose from. This is the first in a set of three books. This volume covers shows in the UK and Ireland from 1984 - 1998, the next volume will deal with shows in mainland Europe, and the third volume will be USA and Canadian concerts. If you have any interest in Bob Dylan, or have seen him live at any time in the past 15 years this book will be of interest to you. Packed full of previously unpublished shots of Dylan in colour and black and white, this is a book you will enjoy returning to time after time. Hume's previous book 'I've been shooting in the dark too long' is also an excellent record of Dylan live, and includes various stories of his travels on the road with Bob Dylan.
Not an essential purchase, perhaps
I have great respect for Paul Williams as a writer and i don't doubt for one moment his credentials as a knowledge on all things Dylan but i do feel with this, his third volume, Paul's obsession with all aspects of Dylan's music actually becomes detrimental to the enjoyment of his writing.
This book covers the least interesting period in Bob's career (1986-90) when his writing and performing skills pretty much dried up. This gives Paul the difficult task of trying to find something interesting to say amongst the mediocrity. Luckily he fleshes out the book by including some well written insights in Bob's later more inspiring albums 'Time Out Of Mind' and 'Love And Theft' which actually falls outside that time frame. Unfortunately though much of his book concentrates on Bob's less inspiring live shows where Paul never fails to find great significance in Bob's smallest change in interpretation from one night to the next as if it represents some great artistic significance. This makes the book in many places quite a boring and indulgent read.
That unfortunately is the book's great fault.
