Pretty pictures... pretty poor plot...3
Superman is my favourite superhero of all. And it's sad that more often than not, the stories written about him do not measure up to what is a fantastic concept. The best Superman story I've read is Kingdom Come and that's not strictly about Superman alone but looks at his place in the DC universe and his relevance in the world of today.

For Tomorrow seems to approach the same subject matter, but for some reason it just doesn't work. It's not the art that's at fault. Jim Lee does his best and while his anatomy is still dubious he knows how to make a visual impact and the colours and inks suit his pencils beautifully. He also draws fantastic backgrounds and tech. I am tempted to lay the blame at the writer's door. Azzarello makes several key mistakes. A writer of hardboiled crime stories he writes throwaway lines Tarantino would be envious of, but in this story, they just obscure the plot. I had to read an exchange three or four times to get the gist of what was being said, and I have an English degree, so I'm not afraid of a little confusion.

We are placed in the aftermath of an event called the Vanishing, in which a million people, including Lois Lane, love of Superman's life, have vanished. But the effects this event has had on those left behind is never really explored. Superman's lack of interest in what has happened to Lois is disheartening from a character whose strength is his warmth and humanity, and the lack of responses from characters such as Ma and Pa Kent or Perry White is unforgivable.

The action scenes with Equus are actually very good, but the scenes where Superman interacts with the rest of the JLA don't ring true and there is a scene between Batman and Superman that shows just how poorly Azzarello understands Superman and even casts doubts on his understanding of Batman.

As a superhero story per se, this is okay, the art being the big selling point. As a Superman story, it is severely lacking.

Awesome4
I've only recently started to get into the whole comic universe, so I don't pretend to know everything there is to know about comics, or their writers, or their characters. I do, however, know what I like, and I like this.

The first thing that struck me about it was the fantastic artwork. Usually, if I don't know the plot to a comic, if it looks good I'll pick it up and hope for the best. This book looked good, and it certainly lived up to my expectations. Looks wise, this is one of the best comics I've ever read. Each panel is laced with detail, and the colours are striking.

The story doesn't disppoint either. The moment I'd finished this volume I was on the Net looking for volume 2. Intriguing, exciting, and full of depth, it's definitely a good read.

All in all, this book was brilliant, and I recommend it to anyone interested in Superman himself, comics, or just sitting down to a good read.

Super!!!5
I have to disagree quite strongly with some of the other reviews and say that this is one of the best Superman stories I have read, its right up there with the movies in terms of its scope and feel.

I have quite a few Superman graphic novels including the Man of Steel collections, the Death of/Return of volumes and the most recent Camelot Falls release.

If you are a fan of Superman and a fan of comics generally I cannot recommend this enough. The story is brilliant, full of heart, excitement and emotion (everything you would want from Superman) and to top it off the artwork is breathtaking.

Don't hesitate - buy this and volume 2 now!!!
