Product Description

Based on a true story, acclaimed writer Brian K. Vaughan ("Y: The Last Man", "Ex Machina") and hot new artist Niko Henrichon ("The Sandman Presents") present a tale of love, war...and pride. In war-torn Iraq, many casualties have gone unreported - among them, an escaped pride of lions. This struggling family of four great cats must find a way to stay together and avoid the deadly conflict that's exploding around them in a world they can never hope to comprehend. This thoughtful, beautifully illustrated original graphic novel will engage both your head and heart - and you'll look at the war on terror through new eyes.

Customer Reviews

Beautiful book...4
Astounding art and writing of a standard one expects from Vaughan. This is a thought provoking and tragic book, my only critiscism perhaps that it's too short to develop the characters fully.
To paraphrase the author in a BBC interview; people can perhaps engage more readily with the suffering of animals than they can with fellow humans who've been labelled 'enemy'
Surely graphic novels have proven themselves as an art form by now?

If you've ever read a graphic novel, or seen a lion, or breathed air... get this!5
I'll just get down to it shall I? Pride of Baghdad is without a doubt one of.. if not THE best graphic novel out there. It's based on a true story and centres around the adventure of a small pride of lions who traipse the broken city of Baghdad after the 2003 Iraq bombings. This may or may not be a commentary on life in Baghdad, but it really doesnt matter. This story is emotive, surprising and beautifully illustrated and creates a real atmosphere reminiscent of Watership Down. But better! Don't let the title fool you, this is just astounding. Case closed.

Promised much delivered little2
I heard an interview on the Today Programme with the author,Brian Vaughan, of this comic about the story of the three lions who escaped from the Baghdad Zoo in the first few days of the liberation of Iraq. I was expecting a wonderful story, about freedom and living with some philosophy and perhaps a bit of theology thrown in, along the lines of Animal Farm. What we get is shallow sentiments with little else from two middle aged men, superimposed upon the King of the Beasts. Oh dear what a missed opportunity. What makes it worse is that the graphic work in the pictures is excellent and perhaps it is worth buying for this alone, but my advice is if you are looking for a story then spend your money elsewhere.
