Average customer review:Product Description
JG 51 is another of the Luftwaffe's top wartime fighter units whose story has never been told in English. The unit's history encapsulates the fortunes of the Luftwaffe's fighter arm as a whole - the heady successes of the early months, the steady attrition and the growing strength of the opposition during the mid-war years, and the final chaos and collapse of the last days. The story works on other levels too. But it is perhaps the details of the pilots who served with the unit that sets JG 51 apart. During the course of the war it numbered more Knight's Cross winners among its ranks than any other. And it is their stories - their successes, exploits and eventual fates - which brings this history to life.

Customer Reviews
usual Weal rehash - overpriced
One of the primary secondary sources used by Weal was the Motorbuch title "Chronik Jagdgeschwader 51 Mölders" by Aders / Held. A 280 page hardback, the original was published in 1985. It has just been reprinted in German and is a far superior volume to this expensive Osprey Elite rehash. Order the German book from amazon.de for around 13 Euros. From the Morbuch website;
"The comprehensive text of this reprint, illustrated with 152 contemporary photographs, shows the way Jagdgeschwader 51 took in WW2 from its beginning up to the end of the war. A comprehensive appendix (from page 201 on), containing, among others, a detailed loss list, is also included."

JG 51's story
This book is a good read on the history of this famous Luftwaffe unit. It details pilots & machines covering the inception of JG 51 to its demise at the end of the war. It also highlights the role of Werner Molders & explains why the unit adopted his name after his death in a flying accident.
