A successful garden comes from choosing plants that work well together. Ideas for plant combinations are presented here, from garden designers from the past and present. They range from maples and bamboos of Chinese gardens to contemporary designs such as beth Chatto's groupings of hostas and heucheras. They include traditional cottage gardens of foxgloves and oriental poppies and well-known pairings devised by designers like Gertrude Jekyll and artists such as Claude Monet. The text gives a history of the pairing and how it was used, with advice for different areas of the garden such as borders, walls and containers.

A rare insight into the effective use of garden classics
David Stuart has collected a wonderful range of photos of plants and gardens, demonstrating the most effective use of many well known herbaceous plants and shrubs. There are very few garden books as inspiring as this one when faced with the problem of how to show a favoured plant at its best. The book is divided into chapters about different settings, each with an appraisal of a plantsman known for their expertise in that area. The photography is outstanding and the captions are very informative, as is the text, with ideas for plant groupings, their best growing conditions and notes about cultivation.
Great inspiratiion for the novice and experienced gardener!
Beautifully designed and photographed book, with exactly what it says inside - really good plant combinations. Organised by garden area and type, there are suggestions for wooded areas, kitchen gardens and cottage gardens. Some combinations you'll know and others will be new to you. Good to leaf through or read thoroughly. Great inspiration!
