Wonderful Work on Windsor Chairs
Dr. Bill Cotton, long acknowledged as the foremost UK researcher on Vernacular Furniture, has produced a Reference Book of the Greatest Importance for Collectors, Researchers, Dealers & Academics alike. Not only has he put forward his important discoveries such as the long arm Windsor Chair of Yealmpton, Devon, therefore predating the North American versions, but increases our knowledge and interest of 18th & 19thC. chairmaking by Regions in a methodical way. East Anglia & the Mendlesham Chair is an interesting revelation of the actual & not perceived chairmaking industry of Suffolk. The Clisset family of the West Midlands (Ernest Gimsons master) is concisely and interestingly recorded too.Extensive fieldwork by both Dr. Cotton & his wife Gerry demonstrates how makers can be traced and linked by their working practices, traditions and styles. Sumptuously illustrated Region by Region with over 1400 illustrations, the journey through the book is a thrilling experience for the reader and puts the production of these chairs, some commonly known as "Windsors" into true cultural context of their production and purpose. Importantly it is not only academically factual and profusely referenced, but is also an easy book to read and use and aesthetically pleasing to the eye with its photographs. This book is a MUST for any true enthusiasts bookshelf. It will colloquially become the Regional Chairmakers Bible, no doubt.
