Synopsis
More and more firms are moving towards the practice of "teleworking", enabling individuals to set up working facilities at home and cutting down on the need to run large head offices. This trend is expected to change our lives radically and fundamentally as the personal computer: commuters will disappear; urban communities will dwindle as people no longer need to live near their workplace; property prices in London and other cities will slump; individuals will enjoy the ability to work in their homes, to integrate family and working life, to enjoy longer leisure hours, to choose their working habits. In this book, Alan Dixie looks at how teleworking will change our lives and how both companies and individuals can take advantage of the trend.

From the Author
Authors review of The Obsolete Office
The Problem: In todays manic world of commerce companies are continually pressing for ever increased levels of productivity and profit. The pressure that this is placing on the workforce is leading to an intolerable level of work related stress, which if the latest research is to be believed, is a prime factor in the steady increase in the levels of depression and divorce amongst middle aged men and women. I believe we are fast approaching the point of no return and that if things do not alter something will have to give. However there is an answer!!!

The solution: Home-based working offers both the employer and employee the opportunity to reach their desired goals. The company can become more profitable through increased levels of productivity and reduced overhead costs. The employee can benefit from a less stressful existence and increased levels of disposable income due to reduced travelling and subsistance costs.

The Obsolete Office is written in an easy to understand format that takes the reader through the current problems we are experiencing today and the solutions offered through home-based working. There are also detailed chapters on the management and motivation of home-based employees. The Obsolete Office has been written to benefit both the employer and employee and will hopefully help to create the partnership of trust between company and worker, which is of paramount importance if greater levels of success are to be achieved in the new millennium.
