Product Description

Scattered across the Lake District National Park are hundreds of tarns and small pools waiting to be discovered by the unhurried fell-walker. With their small tent and immense enthusiasm, John and Anne Nuttall have investigated 'every little speck of blue' on the map in their efforts to compile these detailed mountain tarn walks of Eastern Lakeland. The guide covers the tarns of the northern fells, Patterdale, Haweswater, Wythburn, Grasmere, Ambleside, Kentmere and Longsleddale, Hawkshead, Grizedale Forest and the tarns of the south and south-east in the low fells around Cartmel and Winster. A superb walk is described for each. Each of the 40 walks is accompanied by a hand-drawn 1:25,000 scale route map, plus beautiful pen-line drawings and details on distances, ascents, starting points and precise routes, including historical and environmental snippets to tempt the reader further. This is the companion volume to the "Tarns of Lakeland Vol 1: West".

My discovery of the Lakeland Tarns5
I found the theme of "The Tarns of Lakeland Vol.1:West" a refreshing change to your "normal" fell guide books. Don't get me wrong, I love the English Lake District and have my fair share of guide books including another (The Mountains of England and Wales Vol.2 England) by the authors of this book, John and Anne Nuttall.

The idea of having the tarns of Lakeland as the main objective of a walk rather than the fells themselves appealed to me and I find the information and directions in the guide book are very well laid out and very easy to follow. As an added bonus, the pen and ink drawings by John Nuttall are a very welcome addition.

Each walk is accompanied by a sketched map of the area at 1:25,000 scale and range from easy through to more strenuous walks. Also included are details such as the tarns visited, distance covered, height gained, a brief summary of the walk and a starting point including grid refrence.

All in all a very good addition to my growing book collection and I'll definatley be buying the second book in the series, "Vol.2: East" in the very near future.
