Synopsis
The "Clinical Skills Assessment" has been developed as "an assessment of a doctor's ability to integrate and apply clinical, professional, communication and practical skills appropriate for general practice". Candidates will have to see 13 'patients' during the exam, presenting with problems that will test the doctor's skills in diagnosis, problem solving, communication and ethics, as well as practical clinical skills and treatment planning. "Get Through New MRCGP: Clinical Skills Assessment" is a unique book designed to help the candidate with their preparation for this new and daunting examination. The book opens with a chapter on how to approach the exam, giving valuable advice on how trainees can focus their time in day-to-day GP surgeries, and through reflection, video review and personal study, can develop the skills required to pass the CSA. This is followed by two comprehensive mock examinations, each covering a spread of topics and skills as outlined in the new RCGP GP curriculum.

The reader is provided with the full candidate and patient notes for each station, followed by a comprehensive discussion of the areas that the station is testing, and the points that should be covered by the candidate in order to get the best marks. Each station is supplemented by a summary of the knowledge base required for the scenario, including the latest national guidelines, and a list of take-home messages and further reading.

Customer Reviews

I agree5
I think this was a very useful book in that we were able to act out the scenarios in our revision group and time ourselves. The CSA definitley featured several of the topics that are covered in this book and I was glad to have read it. I think this is a great book if your going to invest in one for preparation of the CSA.

Mentor Courses - good book!5
As a CSA course organiser I would have to disagree with the last comment. This book is well written and has role player scenarios as well as detailed information that would be required of a candidate according to the 3 marking domains. There are ethical dilemmas and difficult patient scenarios which are well managed.
Having scoped other CSA prep materials this one is definitely one of the top runners. The CSA continues to evolve - there is no rigid marking scheme like OSCE's and this book takes this into account. I would highly recommend this to anyone taking the exam.

very useful5
Found this book very useful to practice cases for CSA. Also contains good summary of assessment process and guidelines. would definitely recommend.
