Synopsis
In December 1944, the German army had been retreating since its defeat in Normandy five months earlier. But at 5.00 am on December 16th the German artillery suddenly bombarded the peaceful Ardennes front, initiating what came to be known as the Battle of the Bulge. The story of the Bulge is told at length and from the point of view of individuals on both the German and Allied sides. It is a story of mass surrender and massacre occurring side by side with comic opera and unusual heroism. This was Hitler's last desperate thrust, his final gamble to win the war.

Customer Reviews

Good account of the battle on all levels4
The author had a difficult task of joining broad picture with trench fighting considering how big this battle was. The story takes you into Ardennes in 1944 in chronological way. It follows German offensive and American and British counterattack in general. While reading you'll be informed how decisions were made in high command and how soldiers fought on the ground. Don't expect to be in soldier's shoes through whole book. This story is trying to tell you what happened, how, when and why. All hand to hand combat is in function of bigger picture. I advice you to have some good map beside(only a few are presented in book) because strategic actions can only be understood through maps. Having battles over a big area can be difficult to follow without good map. In this one every village is important.
