One-sided account of 15th Century Wars
While I can not fault this book for the amount of detail that the author has placed in it, this has to be one of the most biased accounts of historical events ever written. The inside sleeve boasts that one of the author's friends' ancestors fought in the Wars, and anyone could guess that that was under the Red Banner. Mister Rowse appears to have used Shakespeare's cycle of plays as his fact base, and has generally ignored historical documents from the actual period. The book is basically a glorification of Henry Tudor. The Lancastrians are portrayed as being pious and righteous, while the Yorkists are decadent and underhanded. Mister Rowse even has a closing chapter where he pokes fun at anyone who doesn't follow his narrow-minded take on the situation. "History" books like this can be very dangerous, and should not be regarded lightly.
A Great Read! Very accurate and I believe Objective!!!
I keep coming back to this well written, objective version of the War of the Roses. The author certainly knows his stuff and the saga is absolutely fascinating stuff - delivered in a readable, non-pompous style. Certainly worth buying.
An enjoyable read
If you have enjoyed Alison Weir's books, you might like to follow up by reading Rowse. He gives a slightly different interpretation to some facts but he certainly knew his stuff.
