This work aims to provide teachers of pupils with special educational needs with a detailed scheme of work which will help them to plan and implement the Literacy Hour. The second edition has been updated to link the revised objectives to the new 2001 QCA P levels and rewrites each of the reception objectives to reflect the progression expected within these level descriptors. Providing support for teachers in developing targets for individual education plans, the book can be used as a scheme of work and includes a case study of another school's scheme of work and sample planning sheets. Age appropriate activites and resources for pupils with severe, profound and complex needs who will work from the earliest learning objectives for much of their education are included. The book offers a foundation for delivering the Literacy Hour on which teachers can build, and the scheme can easily be extended to incorporate a programme for older pupils, both in Key Stages 3 and 4 and post-16. With suggestions for books, materials and suitable information and communication technology resources, this books aims to equip any teacher concerned about the role the Literacy Hour should play in special education teaching.

Review
'I expect to see this book on the resource list of most primary schools by the end of the year. It provides a detailed scheme of work which will prove to be a huge source of support to teachers in planning and implementing the Literacy Hour...I applaud this book and would recommend it to any of the teachers I work with.' An Essential Guide to the Literacy Hour for SEN teachers
As Literacy Co-ordinator in a Special School I found this text invaluable. Many Special Schools have now implemented their own version of the Literacy Hour. Adaptaions ae needed in order to cater for pupils with severe and profound lerning difficulties. This book was produced by Bristol City Council Education in order to raise attainment in literacy for these pupils.
The authors appreciate that the Literacy Strategy needs to be broken down into smaller steps in order for the pupils to access the learning objectives. The book carefully breaks down each strand of the National Literacy Strategy Framework from Reception Year and Year 1 Term 1.
This breakdown provides the teacher with a scheme of work which can be referenced back to the National Literacy Strategy. Each learning objective is matched to the P level indicators as prescribed by the QCA. This means that the work is not planned in terms of age but in terms of ability. The scheme of work is carefully set out and easy to access. To write such a document would take months of work, here it is all done for you.
The book even takes you through how to plan your lessons and offers a framework for an Individual Education Plan.
Whether you use the text as a scheme of work or simply refer to it for ideas, this book deserves a place on every Special School staffroom bookshelf.
Very good
Book arrived quickly once ordered and is the condition I expected from the description. Really useful book if trying to break the national strategy learning objectives down in to little steps.
