One man's view.
Although this is one man's view of the war in the Crimea Col. Dallas's letters seem to predict today's general assessments of personalities and events of that time. Perhaps he doesn't give quite enough credit to the French for their efforts but like a true Brit realises that the British forces have no equal. Except in their organisation, the quality of their leaders, the distribution of rations and supplies, their treatment of the sick and wounded etc, etc. He doesn't pull his punches in his criticisms but does give credit when it's due. He also has a concern and a feeling for the 'common' soldier. Seems like a good egg.
Best to have some knowledge of events before tackling this book but it is well worth reading and begins to involve you. Some of the letters seem repititious but are evidently addressed to different people and this is not made clear by the editor - my only very minor quibble with this book.
Michael Hargreave Mawson has to my mind produced a model of how such correspondence should be presented. His index of personnel is excellent.
He has done his ancestor proud.
