A correction to the on-line summary
It is Gertrud, the maid, who goes on "knitting and knitting", not "a woman friend". "Elizabeth" makes great play at the beginning of this book that she could get no woman friend to accompany her...
witty Victorian writer visits German island
The Bill Bryson of her day, Elizabeth von Arnim is never less than entertaining. This outing will find favour with her established fans, but Elizabeth and Her German Garden offers more humour and is a better introduction to her work
