Customer Reviews
Good introductory book for A-Level / Undergraduate studies.
Entertaining introduction to the fantastical world of Old Attic Comedy and Aristophanes. Starts with an exploration of the influential stance of the poet in Classical Athens and the potency of the comic invective; moves on to the centrality of Aristophanes and a brief background to his early life, including suggestive and revealing details which help the reader to appreciate his particular approach to Athens and his audience. Taking play by play, and heading them under different themes in tight chronology, the book acts as both a commentary for individual plays, and a starting point for readers without any background; no prior knowledge of Classics is presumed and key academic debates and terms, as well as contemporary comparisons (i.e. with 'Yes, Prime Minister') are made. Great intro. for either work or play.
