An interesting introduction to Scottish Castles3
An interesting and extremely readable introduction to a range of Scottish Castles and Ancient Monuments, well-illustrated and ideal for dipping in and out of. Not quite the comprehensive treatise suggested, however, for which reference would have to be made to a range of other (more academic) publications such as MacGibbon and Ross' Castellated and Domestic Architecture of Scotland.

All in all, a good purchase for those just generally interested or planning a trip to Scotland.

A Great introduction to Scotland's best castles5
I love this book. It is beautifully written and marvellously illustrated. It gives excellent coverage of the 200 best castles and historic sites in Scotland. My only complaint is that this is probably only 10% of the total number of castles in Scotland so less well known sites are overlooked. But a great introduction to Scottish Castles and a fine guide for tourists.

A guide book not a history book5
The history may be inaccurate, as other reviewers have indicated, but I was looking for a guide to ancient and mediaeval sites to visit whilst in Scotland this summer. This book with its enticing illustrations gave me exactly what I wanted. The regional organisation is very helpful. I borrowed it from the library and found it so useful I decided to buy it.
