Undiluted Brian King at His Best5
Those who followed Brian King's "Workshop" series in the original Ships in Scale magazine will rejoice in reading his first book, Advanced Ship Modelling. He sets the tone by describing what constitutes a master craftsman, and that is anyone who obtains an original plan from a maritime museum, sorts it out, then builds everything from scratch. Yes, you've guessed it. "Advanced" means no kits and substantial modeling experience. His approach to a "better way of doing things" is originality at its best, seasoned with a marvelous sense of humor and humility. King's subjects are often large British warships, but his solutions on how to model 20th century vessels are universal and presented in a concise, easy-to-follow style guaranteed to ignite scratchbuilding urges.

Following the mandatory chapters on tools and materials, King launches into hull construction, their types and suitability before addressing superstructures, their myriad details, decks and deck fittings, armament, ship's boats, and aircraft. This is vintage Brian King, filled with the perfect blend of unique approaches, modeling philosophy, and the occasional idea that went awry. The chapter on photoetching is outstanding and should convince the majority to give it a go. Abundant line drawings and sharp b/w photos illustrate the text, but the gorgeous eight-page full-color photo spread elevates Advanced Ship Modelling to new heights.

After reading the 118-page book, even professional builders found techniques they wanted to try. For the first-time scratchbuilder, Advanced Ship Modelling is a jewel, explaining the wonders of and how to work with today's modeling materials and tools.

A must for any model boat builder5
If there is one book that I would recommend to any model boat builder, this is the one to have.

A well presented book, Mr King goes into some excellent detail for taking model boat building to the next level. There is plenty of reference material and ideas that you may not have thought of.

Excellent diagrams help show what the text is desribing and guides you through boat building and scratch building.

Outstanding5
As most ship modellers will probably know, Brian King is one of the very best, and this book provides fascinating insights into his subjects and techniques. The explanation of working in etched brass is particularly fascinating. The illustrations are excellent, and some of Mr King's models (such as the aircraft carrier GLORIOUS) are simply breathtaking. Few modellers will reach the superlative standards of the author's models, but all will gain from reading this book. Strongly recommended!
