Product Description

The Bloomsbury Group changed British culture with their approach to art, design and society. This circle of artists, writers and intellectuals, who met for discussion in London in the early twentieth century, challenged Victorian conventions and presented new models of behaviour. They recorded one another continually in both words and images, and Frances Spalding explores these portraits against a background of biographies, including Virginia and Leonard Woolf, Vanessa and Clive Bell, Duncan Grant and Dora Carrington.

Customer Reviews

intriguing5
This book explores the impact of Bloomsbury personalities on each other, as well as their legacy to the twenty-first century. The author demonstrates how this network of artists, writers, lovers and patrons recorded one another obsessively in both words and images. She presents many fascinating biographies, all of which are illustrated with paintings and intimate photographs created by members of the Group. It includes previously unpublished photographs from the albums of the influential hostess and patron of the arts, Ottoline Morrell. Even for someone who was a Bloomsbury novice prior to this book, I found the stories very interesting and the pictures amazing. Definitely recommended.

Bloomsbury Group5
