A great celebration of a wonderful aeroplane
This book has the perfect mix from history to information about the airworthy Spitfires of today. The sumptious photography for all us aviation junkies to drool over makes this book a perfect filler for that gap in your bookshelf.
Spitfire, Flying Legend -The best Spitfire photobook around
A companion to "Hurricane, a Fighter Legend" by the same authors (and a succesor to 'Spitfire, a Living Legend' by Jeremy Flack?), but a much bigger book, both in the number of pages and in size. And though I love the Hurricane book, I think they did an even better job on the Spitfire. It doesn't just focus on photographs of surviving planes, but also gives a lot of background material. The only difference between the hardcover and the paperback is the covermaterial - and the price -, so don't be fooled in thinking that more money will buy you a better book, if indeed there could be a better photobook about the Spitfire than this one.
Superb Photography
I bought the paperback edition of this book a number of years ago and I still regularly thumb through it's well worn pages.
Most of the major models are covered, each marque is illustrated by some stunning air-to-air photographs and an accompanying narrative describing it's wartime exploits. There is a useful appendix at the end of the book giving a brief history of all the many and varied models of Spitfire produced.
Worth buying for the photos alone - enthusiasts of this iconic British aircraft will love it !
