Editorial Reviews

Review
Readers fond of nonstop adventures thickly stocked with variously clawed, tentacled, tusked, venomous, tattooed, insidious, blood-drinking, slime-vomiting plug-uglies will be in hog heaven over this imported series opener, trendily bound in a jacketless pictorial cover. Young Twig has grown up as the foundling child of a peaceable, none-too-bright pair of wood trolls. But he enters a different destiny when he strays off a marked path into the trackless Deepwoods, where challenges as diverse as the aptly named Halitoad, tribble/piranha hybrids dubbed Wigwigs, toothy Bloodoaks, and, most horrible of all, a cooing, preteen, makeover-happy Termagant Trog await. All will be escaped by the skin of his teeth and, as he's not particularly strong, brave, or clever, with the help of mysterious strangers. Rendered in realistic, gloriously obsessive detail in dozens of drawings, the monsters seem to leap (or ooze) to life-sometimes so vividly that Twig seems to fade into the background. By the end, though, he's eluded them all, reunited with his real father aboard a flying pirate ship, and is sailing off into the simultaneously published sequel, Stormchaser (ISBN: 0-385-75070-6), with more sequels to come. Good fun, though the supporting cast tends to overshadow the plot. (Fiction. 10-12) (Kirkus Reviews)

Synopsis
Abandoned at birth in the perilous Deepwoods, Twig is bought up by a family of woodtrolls. One cold night, Twig does what no woodtroll has ever done before - he strays from the path. So begins a heart-stopping adventure that will take Twig through a nightmare world of goblins and trogs, bloodthirsty beasts and flesh-eating trees. One desire alone drives Twig on: the longing to discover his true identity and his destiny...

truly great5
If you are wondring whether to buy this audiobook my advice to you is to stop thinking about it and buy it!
Twig, born and bred in the treacherous deepwoods, was told my his mother never to stray from the path but Twig being Twig he just has to do exactly what he was told not to. This book is full of excellent discriptive writing and is full of exciting, depressing and feel good moments. The cassettes are easily over 3 hours long and are definately worth listening to. If you enjoy this audibook then I would recommend that you also buy the other books in the Edge Chronicles as they are all superb and as good, if not better as this one. So if you're into fantasy and heart-warming storytelling then definately look out for books by Chris Riddel. The narrator of this particular audio book is great as he is excellent at using his voice to set the mood. This book deserves to have more acclaim than the Harry Potter series, I just cannot stress how good it is. Please, do yourself a favour and buy this.
