Product Description
Every garden should have a tree, and it is a boring and uninspiring landscape that is devoid of their shape and structure. There are suitable ornamental trees for all but the very smallest gardens. Choose with care and they will provide year-round interest, and live long enough for many future generations to enjoy. Drawing on 30 years of experience as a practical gardener, John Cushnie suggests over 200 trees to accommodate every need. Whether you have an exposed and windswept site or a boggy clay soil, whether you need a row of trees to make your garden more private or a single specimen as a focal point in the lawn, there is a tree here for you. If you want glorious autumn colour, bright summer flowers or fascinating bark all year round - or if what you really care about is impressing the neighbours - this volume will tell you what you need to know.

Review
John Cushnie bestows his gentle humour and decades of horticultural experience to this comprehensive guide to choosing the right tree for the garden. Packed full of cultivation details, he informs the reader in an easy style of the importance of planting the right tree in the right place. Many labels are misleading and what is bought in good faith to grow to 20 foot in 10 years often reaches double this in favourable conditions causing the dilemma of how to remove it when it is too late. Cushnie offers tree suggestions for gardens of all shapes and sizes, soil type and position. From spring blossom to summer foliage, autumn fruits to winter bark, he reveals a choice of trees most suitable for the purpose required, including the erroneously maligned conifers. Gloriously photographed throughout and including a "six of the best" section, this is a must for anyone looking to plant a tree for posterity or for those just wanting to ensure they don't make an expensive mistake. - Lucy Watson

truly inspirational... a pleasure to look at...the author also offers plenty of sensible advice.
From the Back Cover
Trees are great travellers. They move effortlessly through time and around the world. There are species that have survived the dinosaurs and the ice age without any change in their appearance. Visiting trees from every continent can take root in your garden, the only restriction being extremes of climate.
Trees for the Garden will encourage you to become familiar with many of them.
