Our national epic has yet to be written.5
Finally finished Ulysses, took me a month and a half to take it in and i believe that it was time well spent. The epic is rich to the extreme that i have inevitably passed over manys a treasure in my swift read of this magnum opus. But i will return to what i have missed on my next read with an annotated edition. I believe this book is not as inaccessible as many assume, it depends on your dedication and your preparation. Before reading this unannotated edition read Portrait of the artist as a young man, and the Odyssey. Also a knowledge of Hamlet and the Merchant of Venice is useful. Upon your first reading it will seem a daunting task to finish all 1076 pages of pun / allusion packed dialouge but strive and the fruit that you will reap will be well worth it. This is the epic novel and one to lose youself in. The Characters of Bloom and the Daedalus are perfectly defined and possess lives of their own, the story is the story of a Dublin day, and if you have ever been to Dublin you will understand why one day in the life of a Dubliner could fill a thousand pages. Joyce was a masterful Linguist and it is a delight to decipher his work, it took 7 years to graft this masterwork, the dedication is staggering and the plot water tight. The story itself is light on action, the real plot lies in the characters, the banter that we(through Bloom) listen to and the language that is used to provoke a truely realist novel, albeit through some moments of clearly mad (But genius) literary innovation (=Circe).

I heartily recommend you to read Ulysses, it is the greatest work of literature i have read so far in my life, of course it is not to everyones taste i will read a pulp novel or something after this because i am mentally exhausted lol, give it a go, give it a read and if you do finish it.....Meet me in Dublin June 16th 2008 and see what all the craic is about.
