Customer Reviews
Gives Seamus Heaney more than a run for his money!
This is a magnificent translation from an excellent poet who really understands Old English and the way it works. Seamus Heaney's is a much-feted rendition which has certainly deserved its accolades but for me Morgan's translation stands head and shoulders above it. It's great that it's now been reissued.
Those who like this will also enjoy Morgan's translations of other OE poems such as "The Wanderer", "The Seafarer" and "The Ruin" (available in Morgan's Collected Poems) plus his "Grendel" which portrays Anglo-Saxon heroic society from the perspective of Beowulf's adversary, the ultimate outsider.
