Ambitious Creepy that Does Not Quite Deliver
Gillian White starts out with several promising and chunky plot skeins - long-stay patients about to be exiled into the 'community', schoolgirl witchcraft dabbling, old girl reunions, messy divorces - and at first she seems to be plaiting them deftly enough. But when we get to the heart of the mystery, the reader is forced to utter ever-louder groans of disbelief, and everything starts to unravel. White has an apparent grasp of character, detail and situation but ultimately her fiction fails to ring true.
