Product Description

Principles of Environmental Law comprehensively details the current state of environmental law in the UK and the European Community, focusing on those areas typically covered in most environmental law courses. In so doing, the book adopts a user friendly style, which provides readers with an up to date and comprehensive description of the law that is both interesting and understandable.

As always, Environmental Law had continued to develop at a considerable pace, both in terms of EC and domestic legislation as well as case law. This third edition has been updated to include a discussion of the impact of the Treaty of Amsterdam on the development of EC law and a more thorough analysis of recent trends in EC environmental law. At the domestic level the book has been revised to consider the broader implications of important judicial decisions such as the Empress Car Company case and Hunter v Canary Wharf. In particular the subjects of criminal liability and water pollution have been revisited in the light of the Empress case. The chapter on contaminated land has been rewritten to take account of the detailed statutory guidance, which is now in force. Other legislative changes that have been introduced are also considered in particular the Pollution Prevention Act 1999 which will result in the replacement of the system of Integrated pollution Control with Integrated Pollution Prevention Control (IPPC). The book also provides commentary on the practical application and enforcement of environmental law and includes a list of useful web sites containing invaluable further information.

A useful Source5
I used this text book when studying for an environmental law module in my second year. I found it very helpful as I had no prior knowledge of this type of law or any law for that matter and found the book to be very well laid out, logical and all principles, laws and regulations well explained and not long winded.
My course was environmental science and unlike the previous reviewer I found it a useful reference for the rest of my course as well. I would be confident recommending it to anyone on similar degree courses.

Not what I expected2
I bought this book as part of an environmental management course and was not very happy with it.

It may be a good book if you already know law but it is very disjointed. The first hundred pages deal with enforcement and EU policy.

There is nowhere the book puts together the Regulations with the Statutes, for example if you wish to know under which Act The "Registration of Carriers Regulations 1991" falls under you will really struggle to find out in this book.
Furthermore, the Headings are the Authors not the Acts or Regulations so if you are hoping to find a heading say "Environmental Protection Act 1990" then a bit about it and the Regulations enacted under it you will be disappointed.

It is definatly not a book for someone doing an environmental course I don't know who it is aimed at.
