Product Description

In July 1953, recently graduated as a doctor at the University of Buenos Aires, Che Guevara decided to set off once again to explore the Latin American continent. His principal interests were in archaeology and politics, and his first stops were Bolivia, which had recently experienced a far-reaching revolution, Peru, where he visited Cuzco, the Inca remains at Macchu Picchu, and Lima and Guayaquil in Ecuador. Subsequently, he sailed up the Pacific coast to Panama, Costa Rica and Guatemala, where he witnessed the CIA overthrow of the Arbenz government, and later Mexico, where he was to meet Fidel Castro for the first time. Throughout his travels Guevara kept a spasmodic diary in which he recorded his impressions of his two year journey. It was an expedition which thousands of young backpackers accomplish today and thousands more dream of achieving.

Editorial Reviews

Review
"A delightful and important sequel to The Motorcycle Diaries" Richard Gott; "This autobiographical account of Che Guevara's second trip through Latin America in the early 1950s reveals the political activist emerging from the chrysalis of a simple tourist visiting famous archaeological sites. As the future guerrilla leader follows the classical travellers' route along the spine of the Andes, and is pitched into the maelstrom of the Guatemalan revolution and its overthrow by the CIA, the reader is privileged to observe at first hand the birth of a revolutionary." Richard Gott

Customer Reviews

a must for avid che fans but not as insightful as i hoped.4
this is a good if not brilliant account of ches travels through south america-its quite poetic at times and also funny as he and his mate bulls*** there way around exotic places on their old british motorbike-il pondereso-the powerful one. the two friends were completely broke most of the time and it is heartening to see the warmth and genorosity with which they were greeted-especially in chile and peru. if you are looking for an insight into how this trip might have turned him into a radical, you will be disappointed-there are glimpses of his humanitarianism when he visits a leper colony but its mostly about the two friends bid for survival and their adventures-all in all a very good read for avid che fans.
