A book to treasure and enchant.
My daughter (3yrs 6mnths) is captivated by "The Toy Cupboard". It is her current bedtime favourite and she was even up at 7am this morning, playing with the many delights within.
She (or rather "we") thoroughly enjoyed Wood & Fowler's other books, especially Funny Bunny's magic show and Mole's bedtime story, perhaps because they command attention and appeal to the imagination more than conventional lift-the-flap books. "The toy cupboard" takes this interaction futher with small puzzles, games and even a dressing-up chest all of which will fascinate pre-school age children. This is a book to "explore", I know we have discovered something new on each read.
Some degree of care is required when handling the book if it is to last. Perhaps the fishing rod could be reinforced.
A great way to encourage a love of books.
A natural progression from popular 'lift-the flap' books, this book contains three or four puzzles or challenges on each of it's beautifully illustrated pages. The text is minimal and designed to provide clues and instructions rather than tell a story, or encourage reading. Your child is asked to 'spot the...' (some are easier to find than others), 'lift the flap' or 'turn the wheel', all of which they are probably familiar with. However, not so many books also contain a stand up doll to dress, story book, jigsaw, fishing game or magic trick. My (just) five year old is fascinated by the book, and once taken through to find all the 'treats' now spends a lot of time exploring it herself. There are numerous pieces to remove and replace in the book, and you have to take care not to lose any, a fishing game without a fishing rod is not much fun! The book appears fairly robust and remains intact, without being torn, despite numerous hours of attention. Due to it's very nature this book does need to be handled with some care. My daughter is very aware of this, and sees it as being 'rather special' as a result... a great book to mark a special ocassion rather than an everyday purchase.
