Easy to read and difficult to put down.5
Through Hell for Hitler, yes for the ordinary German soldier on the Eastern front it must have been hell, Henry Metelmann tells us what life was really like as a private in the Wehrmacht. For anyone interested in the German War in Russia this book makes compelling reading. Henry Metelmann is your archetypical soldier a survivor. He had luck on his side but more than that he knew when to fight and when to run, not for him the nazi doctrine of dying for the fatherland. But underlying is humanity and a sadness of the terrible deeds that were committed in Hitler's name. My only criticism is that he did not go into more detail about the giant tank battle for Kursk. A great book and an important eye witness account of this terrible time.

The best book I have read in the last few years.5
This book is incredible. I heard the author in a radio interview which did it's job. I thought "This guy sounds interesting, I'll buy his book."
Interesting does not do this book justice. It is fascinating. The authors memories throw a light on the German invasion of the USSR, which gives an insight on a personal scale which must be read to be believed. This would make a superb novel. The fact that it is one man's memories makes it astounding and moving. I couldn't put it down.

Great Read5
