Product Description

The story of the various attempts by the Allies to cross the Rhine into Germany in 1944 and early 1945, until the final airborne assault in March 1945. "We are going to bounce the Rhine" Field-Marshal Bernard Montgomery, September 1944 Montgomery's bold attempt in September 1944 to cross the Rhine at Arnhem and bring the war to a speedy end failed dramatically. A month later the French tried at Strasbourg and failed. Three months later the famous bridge at Remagen was captured in a daring coup de main by the German born American officer, Karl Timmermann. Following that, Patton sneaked his men across below Mainz and the Canadians crossed near Arnhem. The final strategic crossing by Montgomery between Wesel and Rees, in which as many British, Canadian and American soldiers were killed as on D-Day was, in the final analysis, of no strategic importance. As the glory-seeking top brass headed out into southern Germany and Austria, Berlin, 'the greatest prize of all' as Eisenhower once called it, was left to the Russians, thereby changing the whole history of central Europe in the latter part of the 20th century.
