The Protestant war cry of 'No Surrender!' was first used in 1689 by the citizenry of Londonderry as James II's army laid siege to the city for 105 days and during which half the city's population died. There were many acts of courage, from the heroic death of Captain Browning to the anonymous, apprentice boys who played signal roles in the defence of the city.The book examines how the Jacobites might have achieved success, and the far reaching impact of the siege as a crucial event in the second British civil war. Richard Doherty wrote the best-selling and acclaimed history The Williamite War in Ireland 1688−1691. He is also the author of Only the Enemy is Front, Normandy 1944: The Road to Victory and The Sound of History: El Alamein, 1942, all published by Spellmount. Excellent research meets excellent writing
What a delightful book. This makes very good reading in addition to being very good history. The author combines first-rate research skills with a fluent pen and the result is that relative rarum avis, a highly readable history book. It also benefits from a mass of clear illustrations and some very good maps, although I think that Wexford is shown in the wrong place.
Having read this book I will certainly be making a trip to the siege city to walk the walls, visit the cathedral and drink in some of the atmosphere that comes across so well from these pages.
Spellmount books are always good quality. This is no exception from the eyecatching jacket design to the paper used throughout.
Worth the money and worth reading again.
