Synopsis
The aim of the geniune magician, says Butler, is to realise that True Self of which his earthly personality is but the mask. This book constitutes a most useful preliminary guide to any study 'in depth' of this vast subject. In this book is to be found a remarkably concise explanation of the ancient uses, ritual and true aims of Magic. The author sweeps away the confusion caused by the many misconceptions, and surveys the history of Magic from the 'old religion' of pre-Christian times through to the discoveries of modern psychology, Aid it is, he ways, with the modern school of psychology, particularly Jungian, that the magician finds his closest link with modern thought.

Ever wondered what it's all about? - look no further.
I read this simple and concise book a few years ago when I was just stepping out into this wierd and wonderful world of magic. Along with it's sister books "The Magician" and Apprenticed to Magic" it set me on a path that, much as I have questioned at times (as Mr Butler would no doubt advoctate), I have rarely looked back from. If you want a long list of incantations and symbols that will at best fail to work or at worst blow your head off 'cause you didn't know what you were doing there are plenty of booksout there for you to abuse. But f you want an insight into the true nature of the magical path, with it's highs lows, and frankly hard work you can do no better than read this or any of Mr Butlers other books. Even as a beginner with a few years experience behind me I find this book an invaluable reference and can only recomend it to anyone. Here's to republishing the rest Mr Butlers books.
Exceptional - a must for all occultists
This little masterpiece of Earnest's experience as a teacher of the western mystery tradition, informs on how the teacher forms a link with a student and inducts him or her into the mysteries. He covers a number of magical areas not commonly covered by other authors, including the subtle forms of teaching that he used during his life. This is an easy read that will have you re-reading for the rest of your life until the multiple depths within it are uncovered.
Enjoy!
