A book filled with clear demonstrations and lively paintings
Paul Riley's Watercolour Workshop is filled with lively paintings and brief but clear explanations of his approach to painting in watercolour.
It begins with a demonstrations and paintings to show how various implements and watercolour papers may be used to achieve the best effects.
This is followed with a chapter devoted to 'being bold with colour'. Here the principles of working with primaries, secondaries and tertiaries are clearly explained, with emphasis on colour bias when mixing colours. Paintings are included to show, not only the effectiveness of just using primaries and secondaries, but also how neutrals can be used to produce striking rather then 'muddy' compositions. A useful explanation of pigment behaviour is included.
The remainder of the book is devoted to chapters on composition, atmosphere, character (portraits and life), texture (buildings and their interiors) and imagination. Techniques are explained in each of these areas together with easy to follow staged demonstrations leading to completed paintings.
Overall this is a delightful book. I believe it will appeal to the beginner looking for new techniques, to the more experienced painter looking for inspiration and also to non-painters who admire Paul Riley's works, as it includes numerous examples of his paintings in the 125 pages of stimulating text.
