Product Description

The very diverse range of antique associated with the garden covers garden tools, terracotta wares, cast-iron containers, garden furniture, bridges and summer houses. There has been growing interest in them in recent years, not only from collectors but also from designers in many fields, as these antiques become increasingly used as a source of inspiration. Aa a collecting area, it is still in its infancy but has all the ingrediants a potential collector would choose. There is history, geography, economics, workmanship and engineering. There are makers' marks and trademarks, common, scarce and rare varieties. Now in this enlarged edition, there are many colour and black and white illustrations, including some early trade advertisements from scarce magazines.

Customer Reviews

A superb book which grows on you!5
From seets to seed packets, from shears to sundials, all these and lots more garden items from the past are found in this book , with lots of colour photos as well as black and white, and is one of my favourite "collectable" books.

In my collecting, i have purchased a 1920 lawn edger, 1910 hedge trimmer and an old style shears, all three which i was able to identify in this book.

I like the fact that the items in the photos have not been "restored", but have been left as they are, showing lovely "patina", after years of constant use.

There is a section on toy garden collectables as well, such as the Britains miniature garden range in lead, and even a section on games played in the garden, such as crochet.

Old woodworking tools have a niche now in collector's homes, and garden tools are going the same way, items are getting harder to find, and becoming ever pricier, so the next best thing would be to have hundreds in a book, at a fraction of the price of obtaining real examples and finding somewhere to house them!

Highly recommended!
