Synopsis
Kate Roberts' story concerns the Gruffydd family that lives in a small-holding near Caernafon. The account begins in 1880 and ends in acrimony during World War I. It depicts the hatred and powerlessness of a community against larger events.

Welsh Wizard
Feet in Chains is a fantastic, rambling, flawed travel through the lives of a quarrying family, based in part on Kate Roberts' own experiences. It begins with the arrival of the new wife, Sioned and proceeds through the lives of her children. It comes from a different age, a monolingual village in Caernarfonshire, one Roberts knew about from her childhood. The translation is patchy and doesn't give over the power of the original, but nevertheless allows non-Welsh-speakers a chance to experience Roberts' work. A classic Welsh novel that everyone should read.
