Product Description

Firepower is unique in presenting a penetrating and graphic assessment of the effectiveness of smooth-bore firearms on the battlefield - a vital aspect of the warfare of the period that has hitherto received little attention from military historians.

Customer Reviews

Heavy on the maths, lightweight on accuracy and detail2
MajGen. Hughes writes at length on probabilities of impacts for massed volleys at different ranges and distribution of bullets from bursting spherical case shells meanwhile missing out on important details. Stating (on page 10) that flintlocks appeared at the end of the seventeenth century is just plain wrong. Describing the reforms of Gustavus Adolphus as happening 'in the middle of the seventeenth century' when he was killed at Lutzen in 1632 is not really adequate for a reference book. Mis-identification of illustrations and incomplete information only serve to undermine confidence in the rest of the book. Fine for a coffee table, worthless if you need it for something a bit more academic.
